Bow Island Substation Field Day

 The Bow Island Substation field day is being held on July 26, 2006. The day's activities and tour begin at the Spitz Sunflower Plant, participants are asked to arrive between 8:30 to 9:00 a.m. to register, the tour starts at 9:00 a.m. sharp. Topics for discussion on the agenda for the day are:
  • corn, fenugreek and chickpeas - Manjula Bandara
  • bean varieties - Cathy Daniels
  • pulse disease update - Ron Howard
  • bean irrigation water management - Ted Harms
  • insect monitoring research - Scott Meers
  • agronomic management of irrigated grain and oilseeds - Ross McKenzie
  • annual legume research - Henry Najda
  • water and nutrient management of Timothy - Alan Efetha and Tracy Dow
  • irrigated soft wheat trials - Crooyman Farms:
    - seeding dates and rates; N, P and K fertilizer trials - Ross McKenzie
  • dry land plots: Terry Doran Farm:
    - winter wheat, N fertilizer - Fall vs. Spring management - Ross McKenzie
    - chickpea and lentil variety trials - Manjula Bandara
Lunch will be provided at the Spitz Plant. Field day sponsors include Reduced Tillage LINKAGES, Agricore United, Zone 1 Pulse Growers Association, Alberta Soft Wheat Producers Commission, Alberta Corn Committee and Alberta Winter Wheat Producers Commission. Directions to the Spitz Plant and Substation - from Bow Island, travel 4 km west on Highway #3, travel south on Secondary Highway #879 for 10 km, the Spitz Sunflower Plant is on the west side of the highway; Bow Island Substation is on the quarter section south of the Spitz plant.
