Alberta Farm Animal Care Association (AFAC) is partnering with Olds College extension to present cattle and hog modules of the Quality Livestock Transport training program (QLTT) at Olds College on September 16 and 17, 2006.

"The QLTT program, developed by AFAC and a team of industry advisors, is a comprehensive training course and support service for livestock truckers, shippers and receivers," says Susan Church, manager, Alberta Farm Animal Care Association (AFAC). "The program focuses on the humane and safe relocation of livestock and the regulatory requirements for hauling in Canada and the U.S."

QLTT modules dealing specifically with cattle and hogs will be offered. Topics covered include: livestock handling, biosecurity, loading, driving, offloading, safety and emergency accident response. Participants receive a training manual, code books and a copy of all pertinent regulations. Also included are valuable reference materials to help drivers recognize and deal with livestock unfit for transport.

As an additional bonus for hog haulers, the QLTT course incorporates the National Pork Board's popular Trucker Quality Assurance (TQA) program, complete with approved Canadian-specific content. The National Pork Board will recognize successful QLTT hog-component participants with full TQA certification.

"This course will help improve biosecurity and reduce losses, injury and accidents," says Church. "Meat processors will recognize the certification as part of overall plant quality assurance programs."

Outline for this two-day course:

  • Day 1 - QLTTclassroom instruction and written test (cattle and hog). Includes the National Pork Board's Trucker Quality Assurance (TQA) program. A QLTT certificate of completion of classroom training will be issued after this first day.
  • Day 2 - Hands-on loading of cattle and hogs in the college facility (Day 2 is optional).
The course is being held at Olds College on September 16 and 17, 2006. The two full days begin at 9:00 a.m. and end at 5:00 p.m.

Registration fee is $325 plus GST for the two days; $160 plus GST for the first day only; and, $200 plus GST for the second day only.
