Media accreditation for Future Summit now available

Edmonton... Premier Ralph Klein will launch the Alberta Future Summit 2002 with a keynote address at the Harvest Centre, Westerner Park in Red Deer on February 4, 2002 at noon.

“The Future Summit is an event that government believes will have far-reaching consequences for the province and its people,” Klein said. “With all that is happening in the province today, it is fitting that Albertans begin to think of where the province goes from here in a longer-term sense.”

In 12 days, some 240 delegates will congregate in Red Deer for two days to begin developing a strategic direction for the future of Alberta, building on the thoughts and ideas generated through a public consultation launched on September 28, 2001 and held around the province over the past six months.

“The summit delegates will be examining hundreds of ideas generated by the Albertans who took part in the first phase of this consultation,” said Greg Melchin, Minister of Revenue and summit co-chair along with Doug Mitchell, chair of the Alberta Economic Development Authority. “Their job over these two days will be to explore options, drive toward consensus and to build priority recommendations for the future.

A broad cross section of people have been invited to take part in the Future Summit, with approximately half of the delegates being Albertans who took part in the regional forums.

“Delegates have also been invited to help ensure as many Alberta interests as possible will be represented when Albertans start planning for the future,” Mitchell said. “We have also worked with the education community to ensure a good representation of young Albertans at the summit. And, after all, this summit is about planning their future.

More details about the Future Summit, including the background material with which delegates will be working, will be available on January 28.

Accredited media are invited to attend the Future Summit. A media accreditation form is attached. The form is also available on the Future Summit web site at www.futuresummit.com.
