Is there a place where I can send my
resume to be considered for future job openings that suit my
qualifications?
Each ministry within the Alberta public service is responsible for
staffing their own positions. Resumes are not sent to a central
location. This means that you must take responsibility for submitting
your resume on each specific competition that you are interested in
applying on as you see it advertised. (See
How to Apply for tips).
Ministries will occasionally accept unsolicited resumes for casual
positions however jobs in the Alberta public service are normally filled
through competition. View

I want to work in Canada. What do I
have to do?
There are many issues that must be considered regarding a move to
Canada from another country. One important issue is eligibility
for employment.
The following outlines the eligibility criteria for employment in the
Alberta public service.
- Persons who are Canadian citizens, or who have permanent resident
status, can be considered for permanent or temporary employment.
- Persons with a work permit are eligible only for temporary or
short-term employment. Normally, work permits are only issued when
it can be shown by the employer that there is a shortage of
available citizens or permanent residents for the vacant
position.
There are several steps in the process and it can take several months to
receive a work permit. The process can sometimes be expedited
if you qualify as a skilled worker (for permanent immigration), or if
the work you do falls under a free trade agreement (such as
the NAFTA). Normally, however, you will require a job offer
from a Canadian employer before applying for a work permit.
You can contact Citizenship and Immigration Canada for more details on
the process of entering Canada to work. Their web site can be found at

How can I find out about student
work experience opportunities/ internships/summer employment?
Each ministry in the Alberta Government is responsible for recruiting to
internship, cooperative education, work experience and summer employment
opportunities.
Internship opportunities are normally advertised in The Bulletin and the
APS Jobs website, as well as at appropriate educational institutions.
Co-op opportunities are coordinated through the appropriate co-op
education offices on campuses. Work experience opportunities would be
advertised at the placement offices of various campuses as well. Summer
employment opportunities may be advertised in The Bulletin, the APS Jobs website,
and at placement offices on campuses. In addition, students may submit
their resumes to a centralized database for potential summer
employment opportunities through the
Student Summer Employment Registration Service. The
Registration Service is available to students from February 1 to
August 1.
Watch for ads at your placement office or contact the ministry
you are interested in working for directly. Contact information
can be found in each ministry’s homepage, which you can link to

How does the interview process
work for out-of-province applicants - would I be expected to
attend an interview in-person at my own expense?
Each ministry in the Alberta public service is responsible for
staffing positions. It is up to the individual ministry that is
running the competition to determine the method of interviewing,
though it is common for out-of-province applicants to be
interviewed by telephone. It is also up to the ministry to decide
whether interview expenses would be paid if you were required to
attend an in-person interview. This is done
on a case-by-case basis taking into consideration a variety of factors. |

Is relocation assistance
available?
Again, decisions around payment of relocation expenses are up to the
individual ministries and would depend on each situation. Normally,
relocation expenses would be paid only if the skill set of the candidate
were such that we could not find a local candidate who is more suitable
for the position. A return service commitment is normally required from
individuals who receive relocation assistance. |
