Progress made on regulatory reform

The Alberta Government is continuing to cut red tape through regulatory reform.

The Regulatory Reform Task Force released its annual progress report and three-year review plan updates today. The Regulatory Reform - 1998 Status Report shows the achievements of each department from the start of the program to 1998. The 1999-2002 Three-year Regulatory Review Workplans outline the agenda to be included in each department's business plan.

Over half of the 1,400 provincial regulations have been reviewed and amended. Of those, 211 have been eliminated entirely.

"The program is the most ambitious one of its kind in Canada, and likely in all of North America," said Gary Friedel, chairman of the Regulatory Reform Task Force. "I want to commend every department and agency for their participation and support."

The Alberta review program began in 1995 with a goal to update every provincial regulation and eliminate any that are unnecessary.
