Duplicate cheques can be cashed

Due to a problem at the federal printing facility many people in south Calgary are receiving duplicate copies of their November 2000 Alberta Energy Tax Refund.

The province is working with the Canada Customs and Revenue Agency (CCRA) to identify who received the duplicate cheques. The problem is isolated to the T3E postal code in Calgary where 10,000 duplicates were mailed out. Those people may cash the duplicate cheques, but they won’t get a second cheque in April 2001 when the second installment of the Energy Tax Refund is due to be delivered.

The first $150 installment of Alberta’s Energy Tax Refund is being delivered to more than two million Albertans this week. Those who have moved since filing their taxes may experience slight delays in getting their cheques. And those who filed late will get their first installment in February 2001. The second $150 cheque will go out in April 2001.

A total of 2.3 million are eligible for the refund. For more information, call the Alberta Connects line toll free at 310-4455 or 1-877-599-5107.
