Alberta Issues Special Warrant to Cover Cost of Legislative Assembly Operations

The Alberta Government issued a special warrant today to cover costs to run the Legislative Assembly and its offices for the first quarter of fiscal 1997-98. This includes costs of the Offices of the Auditor General, Ombudsman, Chief Electoral Officer, Ethics Commissioner and Information and Privacy Commissioner.

Details of the warrant are:

• $23.6 million for operating expenses of the Legislative Assembly and respective offices including MLA and staff salaries.
• $483 thousand for capital investment for the Office of the Auditor General.

This warrant meets the requirements of the Balanced Budget and Debt Retirement Act. Special warrants are allowed when the Legislative Assembly has not yet reconvened after a general election. These funding requirements must be ratified by the Legislative Assembly after the new session begins April 15.
