Rights & Democracy Welcomes New President

Jean-Louis Roy has been appointed president of Rights & Democracy, replacing Warren Allmand whose five-year mandate has come to an end.

Mr. Roy, a Montreal academic, was Secretary General of the Agence of the Francophonie from 1990 to 1998 and was Director of the newspaper Le Devoir from 1980 to l986. He also held the post of Quebec Delegate General in Paris from 1986 to 1990.

Foreign Affairs and International Trade Minister Bill Graham announced the nomination on June 25, 2002. Mr. Roy is presently Chancellor of the Université Sainte-Anne in Nova Scotia and is the author of numerous books, including: Une nouvelle Afrique à l'aube du XX1e siècle and L'enchaînement des millénaires, journal de l'an 2000.

Mr. Roy will begin his new position on August 19, 2002.
