Welcome to this first issue of Libert@s online

Message from the President of Rights & Democracy

Libert@s is a monthly electronic newsletter that will be e-mailed directly to our friends, supporters and partners throughout Canada and the world, offering rapid, immediate updates on Rights & Democracy's work.

Libert@s presents several advantages: Firstly, it allows greater space for more detailed information about our work. Readers can simply click on what interests them, accessing documents that we would never be able to reproduce in a traditional printed format. Secondly, it dramatically cuts production time — allowing us to send out up-to-the-minute information that will reach readers instantly, rather than in days or weeks as our printed newsletter, Libertas, would take by regular mail. We believe that this may be particularly appreciated by those of our partners abroad who have access to Internet. Lastly, it permits us to keep our costs low.

Libert@s will also allow us to give more space to the work of our year-old Urgent Action and Important Opportunities initiative — this special operation allows us to react rapidly to unforeseen human rights crises and opportunities for public awareness raising on important issues. You will note that the work of the committee and the grants it has approved will often be featured on these pages.

However, in recognition of the fact that not everyone, particularly our partners in the developing world, has access to Internet, Rights & Democracy will continue to produce and mail a printed version of Libertas four times a year, as we have done in the past.

As always, we will be very interested to receive your feedback and comments on our online newsletter, Libert@s. Please send any comments to mdurran@dd-rd.ca

Warren Allmand, P.C, O.C, Q.C
President
