Funding Agreement Helps Local Exporters
Innovation, Trade and Rural Development and Export Development Canada have entered into an agreement to provide working capital to small and medium-sized businesses expanding into the global marketplace. The Honourable Trevor Taylor, Minister of Innovation, Trade and Rural Development, and Jim Christie, Vice-President, Channel Management and Strategic Programs for Export Development Canada,
announced the Master Pre-Shipment Financing Guarantee Agreement, to encourage
small and medium-sized businesses to invest in the growth and expansion of their

Atlantic Canadian Companies Go on Trade Mission to Florida
A delegation of eight companies from Atlantic Canada will be in Florida from October 29 to November 2, 2006 to investigate their business potential. The companies participating in this trade mission are all small and medium-sized manufacturers of consumer products, including giftware, clothing and home décor item.

Programs encourage innovation in businesses and economic development groups
Trevor Taylor, Minister of Innovation, Trade and Rural Development, released
the details of two programs to encourage innovation in businesses and
economic development organizations in Newfoundland and Labrador. The
programs,
Innovation Newfoundland and Labrador: A
Blueprint for Prosperity.
“Innovation improves economic and social well-being by encouraging new
ideas, products and services that generate economic activity,” said Minister
Taylor. “Taking innovative products to market can be risky, however, and may
require considerable investment. Government seeks to stimulate innovation in
the province by sharing these risks.”

Premier Danny Williams, along with Kathy Dunderdale, Minister of
Innovation, Trade and Rural Development and Minister responsible for the
Rural Secretariat, and Joan Burke, Minister of Education, launched the
Newfoundland and Labrador Innovation Strategy on March 27, 2006.

Hi-Point Industries wins
2006 Exporter of the Year Award
The Minister of Innovation, Trade and Rural Development, Kathy
Dunderdale, announced that Hi-Point Industries Ltd. of Bishops Falls is the
winner of the 2006 Exporter of the Year Award. The other finalists for the
award were BAE-Newplan Group Limited of Mount Pearl and C&W Industrial
Fabrication and Marine Equipment Ltd. of Bay Bulls.

Government to study province’s long-term advanced network needs Kathy
Dunderdale, Minister of Innovation, Trade and Rural Development, has
announced the provincial government is reviewing all government
telecommunications requirements with the intention of creating a
province-wide advanced computer network.

Two new financial programs Minister
Kathy Dunderdale announced the criteria of two
new financial programs that form part of government’s Comprehensive
Regional Diversification Strategy announced in March 2005. The new
Regional/Sectoral Diversification Fund is designed to help non-profit,
economic development groups undertake local economic development projects.
The Small and Medium-Sized Enterprise Fund helps small and medium-sized
businesses engaged in strategic growth sectors.
