Agriculture in the Federal Government
Biotechnology has a very important role in Canadas agriculture and
agri-food industries.
The use of this new technology is fundamental in increasing the global food
production
ability through methods of genetic engineering which have led to the
introduction of disease
and pest-resistant crops; increased nutritional quality of foods; and
healthier livestock,
among others. The following is a list of federal government research programs
in agricultural biotechnology.
- Agriculture and Agri-Food
Canada
- National
Biomass Ethanol Program
- Up to $135 million is directly available to firms planning to build or
expand a biomass fuel ethanol plant in Canada and use
biomass
materials as feedstock. Biomass feedstock may include
feedstock from
agriculture, forestry or municipal waste streams or a
combination of
these. Farm Credit Canada will accept applications under the program until
March 31,
2006.
- Agricultural Safety Net Programs
- Safety Net Programs are designed to offer risk protection to agricultural
producers.
These programs are sponsored by governments at both the national and
provincial levels.
- Eastern Cereal and Oilfood
Research Centre
- Research and development programs are focused on crop production,
biological resources,
and land resource evaluation.
- Pacific
Agri-Food Research Centre
- Directory of research programs at PARC.
- Potato
Research Network
- Research areas in biotechnology.
- Health
Canadas Food Program
- Health Canadas initiative to provide Canadians with information on
safe and nutritious foods.
-
Human Resources Development Canadas Biotechnology in the Agriculture
Sector
- HRDC provides an information section on how biotechnology is used in the
agriculture and agri-food industries.
- Plant Biotechnology Institute
- Links to several of their research programs in biotechnology.
