Sustainable Community Planning

Our goal is to encourage neighbourhood design and land use planning approaches that reduce costs and environmental impacts, while maintaining community liveability. In this section you will find examples of best practices in design and development, tools for planners and designers, and other research on sustainability.

In This Section:

  • Sustainable Planning and Development for Small Communities Workshop
This comprehensive workshop presents practical approaches to addressing long-term infrastructure needs-everything from transportation and water to housing and land use for smaller municipalities.
  • Comparing Neighbourhoods for Sustainable Features
This research compares neighbourhoods for certain aspects of affordability, liveability and the environment. The neighbourhood types range from downtown to the outer suburbs. The comparisons include proximity to daily destinations (schools, parks, jobs, transit), car usage, housing costs, house size, housing choice and more.
  • Would You Know One If You Saw One?
A visioning and assessment exercise for sustainable communities. Featured here are a number of communities which are marketed and /or applauded as sustainable.
