Two New Members Appointed to the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada

OTTAWA, October 31, 2006 — The Honourable Maxime Bernier, Minister of Industry and Minister responsible for the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC), today appointed Dr. Christopher Essex and Dr. Eugene McCaffrey as members of the Council.

"NSERC continues to be a leader in research and development through its funding of university-based research and the training of researchers," said Minister Bernier. "I am pleased to welcome Dr. Essex and Dr. McCaffrey to the Council and know that their experiences in research and development will help contribute to the Council's continued success."

Dr. Essex is currently the Director of the Program in Theoretical Physics at the University of Western Ontario. He has been the recipient of several awards, including an NSERC Visiting Fellowship and NSERC grants, and has been twice acknowledged for teaching excellence. He has written a number of publications in the fields of applied mathematics, physics and theoretical physics, and has won two book awards.

Dr. Eugene McCaffrey has held numerous positions in the field of industrial chemistry including Research and Development Chemist, Manager of Commercial Development and Manager of Research and Development at Emery Chemicals Ltd. He was also Director of Technical and Quality Performance at Henkel Canada Ltd. and most recently was Business Director (Oleochemicals) at Cognis Canada Corporation/Henkel Canada Ltd.

NSERC is a federal agency whose role is to make investments in people, discovery and innovation for the benefit of all Canadians. The agency supports some 22,000 university students and postdoctoral fellows in their advanced studies. NSERC promotes discovery by funding more than 10,000 university professors every year and fosters innovation by encouraging more than 800 Canadian companies to participate and invest in university research projects.
