Suromitra Sanatani Appointed to the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada

OTTAWA, October 31, 2006 — The Honourable Maxime Bernier, Minister of Industry and Minister responsible for the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC), today appointed Ms. Suromitra Sanatani as a member of the Council.

"I am pleased to welcome Ms. Sanatani as a member of the Council," said Minister Bernier. "I am confident that, through her knowledge and diverse experience, she will be able to provide SSHRC with innovative ideas that will enable Canada to remain competitive in university-based research."

Suromitra Sanatani held the positions of Director of Provincial Affairs (British Columbia and Yukon) and Vice-President (British Columbia and Yukon) at the Canadian Federation of Independent Business. Previously, she was manager of the British Columbia Maritime Employers Association and an Associate Lawyer at the firm, Alexander Holburn Beaudin & Lang in Vancouver, British Columbia. Ms. Sanatani is currently the Vice-President of Corporate and Government Relations at Partnerships British Columbia and has recently been appointed as a Special Advisor to the Ministry of Advanced Education to establish the Pacific Centre for Social Innovation.

The Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada is an independent federal government agency that funds university-based research and graduate training through national peer-review competitions. SSHRC also partners with public and private sector organizations to focus research and aid the development of better policies and practices in key areas of Canada's social, cultural and economic life.
