Innovation

Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI)

The Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI) is an independent corporation established by the Government of Canada in 1997. The goal of the foundation is to strengthen the capability of Canadian universities, colleges, research hospitals, and other not-for-profit institutions to carry out world-class research and technology development. In addition, CFI helps to improve Canada's capacity for innovation, attract and retain highly skilled personnel in Canada, strengthen research training, promote networking and ensure the best use of Canada's research infrastructure. The website includes information on committees, funding opportunities and projects funded, as well as a media room, publications and online services.

Innovation in Canada

The Innovation in Canada portal includes a comprehensive inventory of links to innovative universities, public laboratories, federal and municipal agencies and businesses across Canada. The website includes information on business intelligence, financing, human resources, product development, marketing, intellectual property and research services. Also included are diagnostic tools and hundreds of subjects related to innovation.

Science and Technology

Advisory Council on Science and Technology (ACST)

The Prime Minister's Advisory Council on Science and Technology (ACST) was established on July 5, 1996. It provides the Prime Minister with expert, non-partisan advice on national science and technology goals and policies and their application to the Canadian economy. The ACST's mandate is to review the nation's performance in S&T and innovation, identify emerging issues and advise on a forward-looking agenda. The website includes information about the council, as well as information on three expert panels covering the areas of skills, commercialization of university research, and international science and technology.

Assistance Programs for S&T Research

This collection of resources allows users to browse federal and provincial assistance programs, explore venture capital opportunities and investigate tax credit incentive programs targeted at science and technology research. There are also links to information products and other tools and resources.

Canadian Space Agency (CSA)

The Canadian Space Agency (CSA) was established in March 1989 and is a member of the Industry Portfolio. The mandate of the CSA is to promote the peaceful use and development of space, to advance the knowledge of space through science, and to ensure that space science and technology provide social and economic benefits for Canadians. On this website, you can find information on RADARSAT, locate the current position of the International Space Station, or read about the Canadian Astronaut Program.

Canadian Technology Network (CTN)

The Canadian Technology Network links federal and provincial/territorial government laboratories and agencies, universities, community colleges, industry associations, technology centres, and economic development agencies. Together, these organizations provide small and medium-sized enterprises that use technology with access to expertise, advice and information about how to meet technology and related business challenges. Visit this website for a list of specialized advisors from across Canada who provide free guidance.

Council of Science and Technology Advisors (CSTA)

The Council of Science and Technology Advisors (CSTA) consists of representatives from academia, industry and not-for-profit organizations. It provides strategic advice to the Government of Canada on the management of its internal science and technology (S&T). The CSTA was established in 1998 in response to the government's S&T strategy, Science and Technology for the New Century. This strategy identified the need to improve the management and coordination of the federal government's large investment in S&T. It also called for greater government reliance on external advice. Secretariat support for the CSTA is provided by Industry Canada.

Federal Partners in Technology Transfer (FPTT)

Federal Partners in Technology Transfer (FPTT) joins public servants in Canada's federal science-based departments and agencies (including Industry Canada). The initiative aims to establish common approaches, practices and policies to effectively transfer research and technologies from government laboratories to the private sector. The FPTT website provides information on training programs, a list of federal laboratories, success stories, resources, business opportunities, news and events, and information on the benefits of FPTT, as well as on how to join.

Technology Partnerships Canada (TPC)

Technology Partnerships Canada (TPC) is a technology investment fund established to increase economic growth, create jobs and wealth, and support sustainable development. TPC invests strategically in research, development and innovation to encourage private sector investment and to increase the technological capabilities of Canadian industry. TPC supports industries, including small and medium-sized enterprises, involved in environmental technologies, biotechnology, information and communications technologies, new manufacturing techniques, leading edge materials, and aerospace and defence.

Technology Roadmaps

Technology roadmapping is a planning process that helps companies to identify and develop technology to satisfy future service, product or operational needs. Technology Roadmaps provides users with the tools to undergo the roadmapping process and to encourage companies in various business sectors to pool resources to help determine what the future market will require. The website also includes details of international roadmapping initiatives.

Research

Canada Research Chairs

The Canada Research Chairs Program was established by the Government of Canada in 2000 with a goal to support the establishment of 2000 Canada Research Chairs positions at universities across Canada by 2005. The key objective is to enable Canadian universities, together with their affiliated research institutes and hospitals, to achieve the highest level of research excellence, as well as attract and retain researchers, strengthen the training of highly qualified personnel, improve universities' capacity for generating and applying new knowledge, and optimize the use of research resources. The website includes information about the program and a media room.

Communications Research Centre Canada (CRC)

CRC, an agency of Industry Canada, is the Canadian government's primary laboratory for research and development (R&D) in advanced telecommunications. R&D is used for public policy purposes and to strengthen the Canadian economy through technology and knowledge transfer. Under its four research branches (Terrestrial Wireless, Satellite Communications and Radio Propagation Research, Broadband Network Technologies and Broadcast Technology), CRC specializes in taking an interdisciplinary approach to longer-term R&D in wireless systems, radio fundamentals, communication networks, photonics and interactive multimedia. Genome Canada

Genome Canada is the primary funding and information resource for genomics and proteomics in Canada. Genome Canada invests in and manages large-scale research projects in key selected areas, such as agriculture, environment, fisheries, forestry, health and new technology development. It also supports research projects to study and analyze the ethical, environmental, economic, legal and social issues related to genomics research. On this website, users can find contact information, learn about genomics and proteomics in the Genome Education Centre, find information on research programs, or check out the media room.

National Research Council Canada (NRC)

The National Research Council Canada (NRC) helps turn ideas and knowledge into new products, processes and services. The website provides an insight into the research and services conducted by the NRC and its partners. Services provided include:

  • the Industrial Research Assistance Program, providing technical and business advice, financial assistance and contacts for small and medium-sized businesses;


  • online access to scientific, technical and medical information;


  • technology and knowledge transfer services; and

Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC)

The Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) invests in people, discovery and innovation through the provision of grants, scholarships and awards for research in universities, industry and institutions related to natural sciences and engineering. Program guidelines, application forms and a complete listing of awards made since 1999 are available online.

Networks of Centres of Excellence (NCE)

Three federal granting agencies — the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC), and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) — combine their efforts with Industry Canada to support and oversee the Networks of Centres of Excellence initiative. The network is built on the funding for research and training in Canadian universities through the agencies' peer-reviewed research programs. The NCE is a partnership among universities, industry, government and non-governmental organizations aimed at turning Canadian research and entrepreneurial talent into economic and social benefits for all Canadians. Precarn

Precarn Incorporated is a national consortium of corporations, research institutes and government partners working within the intelligent systems sector. Precarn funds, coordinates and promotes collaborative research conducted by industry, university and government researchers. With support from Industry Canada, other federal departments and provincial government agencies, Precarn plays a key role in Canada's growing intelligent systems sector. Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC)

Created in 1977, the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) is a federal agency that promotes and supports university-based research and training in social sciences and humanities. SSHRC partners with a variety of government, business and non-profit organizations to develop and fund strategic research programs. The website includes information about SSHRC, how to apply for funding, program guidelines and eligibility criteria to help determine if your research falls under SSHRC's mandate.

BioPortal: Your Window to Biotechnology @ the Government of Canada

The Government of Canada BioPortal is the online gateway to the latest government information on biotechnology for consumers, industry, scientists and educators. This site has five sections that include resources from all federal departments and agencies.

Canadian Biotechnology Advisory Committee (CBAC)

The Canadian Biotechnology Advisory Committee (CBAC) was established in September 1999. It provides expert advice to the federal government on the ethical, legal, social, regulatory, economic, scientific, environmental and health aspects of biotechnology. The CBAC reports to the Biotechnology Ministerial Coordinating Committee, whose members are the federal ministers of Industry, Agriculture and Agri-Food, Health, Environment, Fisheries and Oceans, Natural Resources, and International Trade. This website contains meeting minutes, publications, Biotech Watch (the CBAC's newsletter), a newsroom, information by topic (genetically modified foods, patents, ethics, privacy, etc.), a dialogue tool, links and a glossary.

Canadian Biotechnology Clusters

This website is a guide to the growing biotechnology sector in Canada, organized by area of activity. Each cluster includes links to information on leading research activities (including technology transfer), company profiles, support mechanisms and investment opportunities for cities across Canada. The clusters are listed by province, or in alphabetical order by city. The site also provides a list of life science parks and incubators in Canada.

Canadian Biotechnology Strategy (CBS)

The government of Canada developed the Canadian Biotechnology Strategy (CBS) to ensure that Canadians fully realize the potential of biotechnology. Read presentations exploring the impact of biotechnology on health, the environment, and social and economic development. Make a difference by attending one of the listed consultations or discussion forums, and find out the results of public opinion research on biotechnology issues carried out since 2000.

The other section is a guide to industrial sustainability through biotechnology, including information on biotechnology as an enabling technology, biotechnology in industrial sectors, and biotechnology challenges and opportunities.

Life Sciences Gateway

The Life Sciences Gateway provides a comprehensive collection of links to information about bio-industries in Canada, government programs and strategies, information on why to do business in Canada, and international business information.

Assistive Devices Industry Office (ADIO)

The Assistive Devices Industry Office (ADIO) provides information on products and services that are designed to help users overcome the barriers raised by standard technologies. The website contains an Accessible Procurement Toolkit and Assistive Technology Links to help users find out about assistive devices technology and services. Register or update your company profile in the online directory of assistive devices companies or search the directory for available products and services.

Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Clusters

This website provides a geographic and a sectoral overview of the information and communication technology (ICT) industry in Canada, organized by region and sector (e-business, e-learning, ICT, marine communications, microelectronics, new media, photonics, software, telecommunications and wireless).
