Youth Internships NRC-IRAP

National Research Council Canada (NRC)

Last Verified: 2003-11-21

T he National Research Council of Canada has two internship programs managed by the Industrial Research Assistance Program (IRAP). These programs provide financial assistance to small and medium enterprises (SMEs) that want to hire post-secondary graduates.

The two programs are:

  • Internship Program with Innovative Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs)
  • Collaborative Research Internship Program

Eligibility Criteria

SMEs
To be eligible for these programs, your business enterprise must:

  • be a small or medium enterprise (SME) with less than 500 employees;
  • be incorporated and for profit;
  • wish to enhance its innovation capability;
  • be willing to establish a trusting relationship with NRC-IRAP.

Graduates
To be eligible for one of these programs, a graduate must:

  • be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident or person who has been granted refugee status in Canada;
  • be between 15 and 30 years old (inclusive);
  • have completed post-secondary education;
  • be a first-time youth participant in a placement of the Career Focus Program of the Youth Employment Strategy (YES).

Summary

Internship Program with Innovative SMEs
Graduates work on a wide range of projects and activities focused on research and development (R&D), manufacturing processes, market analysis or business development. The internship should represent a new activity for your enterprise, one that might not otherwise be pursued without external support.

Collaborative Research Internship Program
To participate in this program, your business enterprise must be collaborating with either the National Research Council and/or the Communications Research Centre (CRC) on activities with commercial potential. Graduates will be expected to take part in science and technology projects or activities that the business is conducting with NRC and/or CRC.

In either program, the possibility of ongoing employment following the internship period, without the displacement of any existing positions, should be demonstrated.

Internships
Internships for these two programs are between six to twelve months, available to SMEs anywhere in Canada. Maximum support is $12 000 for post-secondary graduates. These programs are available from April 2003 to March 2008.

SMEs are also encouraged to use the Youth Internship NRC-IRAP Web site (see More Information) and Human Resources and Skills Development Canada regional offices to locate suitable candidates. You may contact an IRAP Regional Office nearest you by calling 1 877 994-4727.
