The Department - Industry Canada


The department's mission is to foster a growing competitive, knowledge-based Canadian economy. The department works with Canadians throughout the economy and in all parts of the country to improve conditions for investment, improve Canada's innovation performance, increase Canada's share of global trade and build a fair, efficient and competitive marketplace. Program areas include developing industry and technology capability, fostering scientific research, setting telecommunications policy, promoting investment and trade, promoting tourism and small business development, and setting rules and services that support the effective operation of the marketplace.

  • Industry Canada has 6,104 full-time equivalents (FTEs) for the 2006-07 fiscal year.


  • Industry Canada's mandate includes three strategic objectives (a fair, efficient and competitive marketplace; an innovative economy; and competitive industry and sustainable communities).

  • The headquarters is located in the C.D. Howe Building, 235 Queen Street in Ottawa. In addition, there are 15 regional offices located across Canada.

  • The original name of Industry Canada was the Department of Trade and Commerce, which was created on December 3, 1892. The first Minister was the Hon. Sir Mackenzie Bowell. For more information, see the History section.


  • The Minister is responsible for many Acts including Telecommunications Legislation, Marketplace and Trade Regulation, Canadian Intellectual Property Office (CIPO) Legislation, and Consumer Legislation.
