Furniture

The Canadian furniture industry produces furniture designed for use in households; institutions such as schools, hotels, restaurants and other public buildings; and office furniture and fixtures such as office chairs and desks, showcases, partitions shelving and lockers. Furniture parts and frames as well as mattress manufacturing and blind and shade manufacturing are also included in this industry.

The Canadian Furniture Industry is:

  • The 2nd largest exporter of furniture in the world
  • Globally competitive
  • A major contributor to the Canadian economy, employing 106,000 people in 2002
  • Export-oriented with 52% in 2002 of the production being shipped outside of Canada, mostly to the U.S.
