The Alberta Funeral Services
Regulatory Board was established on December
1, 1992 under the Licensing of Trades and Businesses Act and the
Funeral Services Business Licensing Regulation.
The Funeral Services
Act and Regulations, passed in the
1998 spring sitting of legislature, came into effect December 1st,
1998. This clarifies, updates and combines some of the existing sections
of the Licensing of Trades and Businesses Act and the Prearranged
Funeral Services Act.
These changes in
legislation have increased the role of the Alberta Funeral Services
Regulatory Board in the funeral service marketplace. The board
licenses funeral businesses, crematories, funeral directors, embalmers and
pre-need salespeople. The board also sets educational standards, monitors
performance standards and investigates consumer complaints.
