Transport Canada Library Services
The Ottawa site contains more than 100,000 books and technical reports on transportation and related topics. It subscribes to more than 300 periodicals and serials and maintains an extensive collection of reports, studies and reviews generated by Transport Canada, as well as other major transportation organizations.
Marine Safety Publications
These Marine Safety publications are provided by the Marine Safety Directorate.
Publications
Access to Publications and Acts of particular interest to Commercial Operators. Presented by the Canadian Hydrographic Service, the site offers a direct link to The Canada Shipping Act, which regulates marine transportation in Canadian waters. Charts, chart catalogues and Notices to Mariners (NOTMAR) are available. Publications include Sailing Directions, Tide and Current Publications, List of Lights, Buoys and Fog Signals and Radio Aids to Marine Navigation.
Boating Safety
The Office of Boating Safety presents extensive marine safety information and links covering a number of topics. Practical on board safety measures, legal obligations and requirements, information about laws, licensing, the environment and safety news is all covered. Access to courses, publications and information for foreign vessels is also available, as are further links to safety information of interest to commercial operators.
Weather Course
Why do thunderstorms form? What is El Niño? How does radar detect precipitation? These and many other subjects are covered at this site which is an initiative entitled
Project Atmosphere Canada, a collaboration of Environment Canada and the Canadian Meteorological and Oceanographic Society. Other topics- Hazardous weather, The coriolis effect, Air-sea interaction, Clouds, High and low air pressure, Westerlies and The Jet Streams, Sunlight and Seasons, The Atmosphere Aloft, Water Vapour and The Water Cycle, Weather Satellites.
Ice Codes
Ice Codes and symbols are used extensively on ice charts. This permits the most efficient use of the limited map space available to describe sea ice and icebergs. The complete text describing ice coding can be found in the Manual of Standard Procedures for Observing and Reporting Ice Conditions (MANICE) available at the link above. The codes, standards and reference materials are also available here.
The Canadian Ice Service (CIS) has introduced new World Meteorological Organization (WMO) colour codes for the 2003-04 winter season. Beginning in December 2003 all daily and regional charts will use the new WMO colour codes.
Ship Safety Bulletins
Ship Safety Bulletins provide safety information, guidelines, product warnings and instructions. The most recent publication and an archive dating back to 1977 are available. Search options include year, title, keyword and bulletin number.
The Marine Safety Review Newsletter
The Marine Safety Review Newsletter is published by the Marine Safety Directorate of Transport Canada. The newsletter keeps the maritime community informed about marine legislation, relevant research, projects and events. Previous issues are also available.
The Marine Safety Strategic Plan
The Marine Safety Strategic plan, covering the years 2003 to 2010, is called The Next Wave. It provides a blueprint reflective of today's marine industry and is consistent with Marine Safety's ongoing priorities and initiatives. It articulates the mission, vision, values and outlines the strategies chosen to achieve Marine Safety's mandate in the years ahead.

Canadian Transportation Research Gateway
The Canadian Transportation Research Gateway was launched at the end of September 2004 and is now available at: http://www.tc.gc.ca/ctrg-prtc/.
The Gateway is a comprehensive, annotated, bilingual collection of web-based resources on the subject of transportation in Canada. It is intended to provide researchers, students, government and industry with convenient access to evaluated Canadian transportation research resources through a single website.
