Legislative Responsibilities

Canada Centre for Cadastral Management of Geomatics Canada is responsible under the Canada Lands Surveys Act, for the Canada Lands Survey system. This system forms part of, and supports, some 23 property rights systems operated by federal and territorial governments on Canada Lands. In addition, there are over 50 federal and territorial pieces of legislation that establish the Canada Lands Survey System as the authoritative system on the affected lands.

The Surveyor General and Director of the Canada Centre for Cadastral Management is the Government of Canada's corporate surveyor for Canada Lands. As such the Division has a role in protecting the Government of Canada's interests in land by ensuring proper identification and description of the extent of the interests and by providing effective and efficient accessibility to the boundary and parcel information. This mandate stems from the Canada Lands Surveys Act, and over 50 other pieces of legislation or Orders-in-Council. The activities apply to Canada Lands as defined in section 24 of the Canada Lands Surveys Act. Canada Lands consist of approximately 2600 Indian reserves, the National Parks system (including historic sites and canals such as the Rideau and Chambly), the Yukon, Northwest Territories, Nunavut and offshore areas of Canada.

Under the Canada Lands Surveyors Act, the Minister of Natural Resources Canada is responsible for the profession through the Association of Canada Lands Surveyors.
