Arrival And Check-In

  • The Airport Terminal Building has four slow moving revolving doors - two are located in the check-in area and two are located in the Arrivals area.
  • All doors are equipped with automatic push bars.
  • All ground transportation agencies have lowered check-in counters.
  • The Airport Terminal Building has an accessible “Ask Me” Kiosk, which includes flight information, maps, etc.
  • All ATMs are equipped with tactile markers.
  • New parking lot with accessible shuttle transportation to and from the airport to the parking lot is available.

Personal Assistance

  • A Volunteer Host Program called the Tartan Team, identified by a tartan vest, provides a warm and friendly welcome. Volunteers are on site most days of the week from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and some evenings. Volunteers will provide assistance to persons with special needs such as assisting people to washrooms. Volunteers also provide information and directions related to facilities services and retail stores.

TTY Phones

  • One TTY is located at the Information Booth (902) 873-1224.
  • One TTY is located at the Business/Hotel Reservation Kiosk.
  • In addition, the Airport Terminal has nine TTY public telephones located throughout the Terminal Building.
  • All public telephones are wheelchair accessible and have volume controls.

Wayfinding

  • All signs are positioned to avoid glare or shadows.
  • All signs have contrasting colours and meet width and height guidelines.
  • All signs have Sans Serif for letters and Arabic for numbers.
  • Tactile markers are located in all elevators and escalators.
  • Contrasting colour and grading is used between the walkways and waiting areas on the second level Departures area.

Washrooms

  • All washrooms at Halifax International Airport are wheelchair accessible.
  • Wheelchair accessible washrooms are located in the following areas:
    1. Check-In/Ticket Counters
    2. Food Court/Airport Square
    3. Domestic Arrivals Area
    4. International Arrivals Area
    5. Departures Level – Gate 16
    6. Departures Level – Gate 20
    7. Departures Level – Gate 23
  • All wheelchair accessible washrooms, with the exception of Gate 20, also include private “family” washrooms that are fully accessible.

Other Accessibility Features

  • Halifax International Airport Authority provides tours for anyone with special needs to assist in familiarizing themselves with the airport.
  • The Airport Terminal Building is equipped with ceiling lights for the hearing impaired when a fire alarm is activated.
