In many countries, you can use an international toll-free number to reach the Department’s 24/7 Emergency Operations Centre in Ottawa. Dialling this number enables you to speak to a consular officer for emergency assistance after hours. Before you leave, check the numbers listed below or the countries on your itinerary (a number is not available from all countries). Please note that, in some countries, the international toll-free number may not work when placing the call through some telephone service providers (local carriers). Callers may also encounter difficulties using cell phones to connect to toll-free numbers. At pay phones, you may require a phone card or coin/token. An international fee may also be required to complete the call.
