Aboriginal Canada Portal – About Us

Welcome to the Aboriginal Canada Portal, your single window to Canadian Aboriginal on-line resources, contacts, information, and government programs and services. The portal offers ease of access and navigation to listings of Aboriginal associations, businesses, organizations, bands, communities, groups, news and peoples.

A portal is larger in scope than a site, it is a single window to on-line information and services of common interest. The information in this portal is organized and displayed from a users point of view. The Aboriginal Canada Portal links to the following sites in an organized manner: National Aboriginal Organizations, 12 Federal Government departments with Aboriginal mandates, all Provincial Governments and organizations with Aboriginal responsibilities, as well as all related Aboriginal community information.

GTEC Distinction AwardsThe Aboriginal Canada Portal won a bronze medal at the 2001 Industry Distinction Awards of Excellence in the Management of Information and Technology, held as a part of Government in Technology (GTEC) week.

The governing body of the Aboriginal Canada Portal (ACP) is the ACP Working Group whose role it is to oversee the development and maintenance of the Portal. The scope of their responsibility includes:

  • Providing advice and guidance on: content, organization, functionality, links, consultation, best practices, communications and future development priorities;
  • Bring forward organizations member comments; and
  • On a regular basis, provide the ACP web-master with organizational announcements and events.

The goal of the site is to continue to evolve into a virtual forum in which:

  • all Aboriginal stakeholders (Aboriginal peoples, organizations and government policy and program developers) may locate, discuss and share information, views, services, successes and issues amongst one another;
  • and, act as a central gateway to increase the awareness of Aboriginal Peoples history, heritage, traditions and Aboriginal community successes among Aboriginal Peoples and non-Aboriginal Canadians.

As well as the following Federal Government departments:

This partnership between Government departments and the Aboriginal community will allow better quality service and information delivery and to the degree possible, ensure that the site continues to evolve with a user-friendly and useful manner. The portal will allow Aboriginal peoples to increase their access to relevant information, programs and services on-line as well as open the door to easier access to information and service delivery.

This project was made possible – in part – through the Canadian Culture Online Program of Canadian Heritage.

The Portal's content, organization and functionality was focus tested among the National Aboriginal Organizations.
