About UsResource management in the Northwest Territories involves monitoring and regulating the uses of land and water. A set of regional and territorial boards regulate these environmental matters. The Mackenzie Valley Resource Management Act (MVRMA) established these boards in 1998. The boards are responsible for preliminary screening of development proposals, environmental impact assessment and impact reviews, and the issuance of water licenses and land use permits. The boards are part of the implementation of Canada’s settlements with Aboriginal people. Boards are made up of representatives nominated by Aboriginal people, the Government of Canada, and the Government of the Northwest Territories. The Board Relations Secretariat (BRS) was established by DIAND to support good working relationships and partnerships with the boards.
