Northwest Territories District Offices

DIAND divides the NWT into two districts, which are further divided into sub-districts. Where there are settled land claims, the districts are adjusted to correspond with the boundaries of the settlement areas as defined in the appropriate land claim agreement.

DIAND district inspectors are responsible for ensuring compliance with relevant legislation, regulations, and the terms and conditions in authorizations that are issued by DIAND's Land Administration and the various land and water boards.

Some of the duties of a district inspector include:

  • provide information and support to ensure compliance with the applicable acts and regulations;
  • inspect, monitor and analyze data to measure compliance;
  • conduct investigations to determine compliance;
  • recommend enforcement options;
  • prepare court briefs, evidence in the case of non-compliance;
  • take other actions deemed necessary to prevent or minimize danger to the environment and the public and prevent the misuse of natural resources.

The North Mackenzie District includes the following areas:

  • Inuvialuit Settlement Area as defined in the Western Arctic Claim, the Inuvaluit Final Agreement
  • Gwich'in Settlement Area as defined in the Gwich'in Comprehensive Land Claim Agreement
  • Sahtu Settlement Area as defined in the Sahtu Dene and Metis Comprehensive Land Claim Agreement

The South Mackenzie District includes the following areas:

  • Yellowknife District
