Our Mandate
To ensure meaningful and effective management, development and disposition
of Crown land in the NWT,
the Operations Directorate:
- Administers the field activities of the department in the NWT
through its district and sub-district offices, and regulates the use
of land pursuant to the Territorial
Lands Act
and the Federal Real
Property Act
through its Land Administration office.
- Enforces and ensures compliance with legislation, regulations, the
terms and conditions of the Territorial
Lands Act ,
Federal Real Property
Act ,
Mackenzie Valley Resource
Management Act ,
Northwest Territories
Waters Act
and permits and licences issued by territorial land and water boards,
as well as responds to infractions, such as spills, throughout the NWT.
- Participates in consultation and environmental screening of applications
for land disposition and permits and recommends permit conditions for
inclusion when issued by another party, eg. Land and Water boards
- Develops regional surface and sub-surface land policies in cooperation
with the Government of Canada's Northern Affairs Program and the Government
of the Northwest Territories
- Provides support to land claim negotiators and the Protected Areas
Strategy committee, by providing up-to-date information on third party
interests and subsurface issues, and initiates the implementation of
DIAND
obligations under the various claim agreements
The Operations Directorate holds responsibilities for the following
