Demographics show that Saskatchewan has one of the fastest growing Aboriginal populations in Canada. Most of the population is young, educated and looking for employment where they could utilize their knowledge and skills. With growing emphasis on ensuring the labour force reflects the population diversity, employers are seeking Aboriginal candidates to meet their workforce needs especially with the expected sharp rise and the anticipated retirement of "Baby Boomers". Employers view this as an opportune time to initiate training and developmental opportunities to continue to meet their operational requirements. The Department of Indian and Northern Affairs established an Aboriginal Inventory recognizing the high demand for good aboriginal candidates, and the need for an efficient and centralized inventory that could be accessed by all employers. Its mandate is to assist provincial, municipal and private sector employers find Aboriginal candidates, and to assist the Aboriginal workforce in accessing employment opportunities. The Aboriginal Inventory is available to all employers. Indian and Northern Affairs has partnered with the Public Service Commission to enhance the Aboriginal Inventory, the referral process, and to provide an effective and efficient candidate referral system for positions in the federal public service. As senior management develops human resource, succession and recruitment plans to meet legislative and operational needs, this inventory will serve as a means to recruit and refer qualified aboriginal candidates to the Federal Public Service.
