BIOGRAPHICAL NOTES

Timothy J. Christian

Timothy J. Christian, QC studied law at the University of Cambridge and, after a short time in practice, joined the Faculty of Law at the University of Alberta where he taught constitutional, labour and administrative law. He was appointed Dean of the Faculty in 1986 and served in that capacity for 10 years. He acted as counsel in several major constitutional cases and as a mediator in several strikes.

In 1995 he was appointed by the Honourable Ron Irwin as a Special Representative to deal with the concerns of the Pikanii First Nation. This resulted in a tripartite agreement between Alberta, Canada and the Pikanii First Nation which was ratified in 2002.

Christian was appointed on several other First Nation files as Canada's Chief Federal Negotiator or Federal Representative. Final agreements were achieved with: Smith's Landing First Nation in 2001, Salt River First Nation in 2002, and Fort McKay First Nation in 2003. The Honourable Andy Scott appointed Christian to negotiate an out-of-court settlement with the Dehcho First Nations in 2004. A settlement agreement was signed in July, 2005.

The Honourable Jim Prentice appointed Christian to represent Canada in the ongoing Dehcho Process discussions and the negotiations involving the Katlodechee First Nation. Christian is on a leave without pay from the Faculty of Law at the University of Alberta, and, in addition to his duties as a negotiator, carries on a labour and corporate commercial arbitration and mediation practice.
