Nasittuq
Corporation is a Canadian Intercultural enterprise, which was created
as an agent for the joint venture between Pan Arctic Inuit Logistics
Corporation (PAIL) and ATCO Frontec Corp. PAIL is an organization wholly owned by seven shareholder
corporations representing Canada’s Inuit community. These organizations include: Labrador Inuit Development Corporation,
Makivik Corporation, Nunasi Corporation, Inuvialuit Development Corporation,
Qikiqtaaluk Corporation, Sakku Investments Corporation and Kitikmeot
Corporation. ATCO Frontec is a
principal operating subsidiary of ATCO Ltd. providing technical services
and infrastructure management to government and industry.
Nasittuq has been
awarded a Government of Canada contract for up to 10 years to
operate and maintain the North Warning System (NWS) in Canada on behalf of
the Department of National Defence (DND) and the U.S. Air Force. In effect on December 1, 2001, the contract
is for an initial five-year fixed term with two option periods of three and
two years respectively.
The North
Warning System contract, originally awarded in 1988 to ATCO Frontec Corp.,
and further renewed in 1995 to the ATCO Frontec/PAIL joint venture,
includes the management, operation and maintenance of 47 radar sites from 5
logistics support sites across Canada’s North: Inuvik, Cambridge Bay, Hall Beach, Iqaluit, and Goose
Bay. Also included are a System
Support Center and a System Control Center in North Bay, Ontario, as well
as a Contract Management Office in Ottawa, Ontario. The contract itself involves
maintenance, logistics, environmental systems management, systems
engineering and project management. The NWS mission is to provide the appropriate authorities with the
necessary warning and assessment of airborne threats to North America along
with enhancing the sovereignty of Canada and the United States.
