The Agence métropolitaine de transport (AMT) is aiming to gradually implement so-called intelligent applications in the management and operation of its public transit facilities. The AMT is aware that technological break-throughs in Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) can provide innovative, effective tools for improving traditional public transit operating methods as well as improving security, information delivery and resource management.

The AMT will begin by developing a strategic plan for incorporating and deploying ITS at the agency’s park-and-rides and transit hubs, in reserved bus lanes, and on commuter train and bus lines. Beyond this, the plan will look forward to the use of ITS by all public transit authorities in the Montreal metropolitan area.

The AMT also seeks to provide an intelligent information system to public transit users. The purpose is to improve the information provided to transit users in the Greater Montreal area. More specifically, it involves an automated real-time system for detecting delays and informing users of these delays. When a significant delay is detected, users would be automatically informed via their cell phones or pagers.
