Transport Canada plays an important role
in promoting aviation safety and security in the region.
The department is responsible for the development and
enforcement of aviation regulations.  Aviation inspectors regularly conduct inspections and audits to ensure that the aviation industry complies with these regulations and standards.  The department also determines training standards for pilots, flight instructors, aircraft

maintenance engineers and other aviation professionals.

Transport Canada’s Atlantic Region oversees the National Airports System operations transferred under the National Airports Policy, while continuing to operate two airports. Transport Canada’s Airports branch also manages the Labrador Coast Airstrip Restoration Program, and the Airports Capital Assistance Program.
