Canadian High-Tech Delegation Ready to do Business in Hong Kong

OTTAWA, December 1, 2006 — The Honourable Maxime Bernier, Minister of Industry, and the Honourable David Emerson, Minister of International Trade, today expressed their support to the Canadian delegation at ITU Telecom World 2006 in Hong Kong. The delegation will be showcasing their latest high-tech products and services, and will also have an opportunity to forge commercial ties with business abroad.

"In addition to showcasing their expertise at the ITU Telecom World Exhibition, many Canadian industry leaders will share their visions and insights on the future of the digital society at the ITU Forum," said Minister Bernier. "The impressive size and composition of the Canadian delegation demonstrates why Canada's ICT sector is fast gaining a reputation as a global leader. I encourage all ITU participants to discover Canada's digital advantage."

"Canada is an acknowledged leader in information and communications technologies. Some of the world's most prominent and innovative multinational companies are investing and taking advantage of our expertise in this sector," said Minister Emerson. "Canada's presence at ITU Telecom World 2006 speaks to the important role ICTs play in driving Canadian trade and competitiveness."

Stewart Beck, Assistant Deputy Minister for Investment, Innovation and Sectors representing Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada, is leading Canada's distinguished information and communications technologies (ICT) delegation at the event, to be held from December 4 to 8, 2006.

Over 50 tech-savvy Canadian companies and organizations will showcase their latest products and services at the Canada Pavilion, located in Hong Kong's new AsiaWorld-Expo convention centre. These exhibitors are at the forefront of Canada's leading technology innovation in wireless, ICT security and networking. Canada's corporate presence at ITU is significant, with leading global industry players such as Nortel and Research in Motion (RIM) along with many other small and medium-sized companies showcasing ICT excellence.

The Canada Pavilion will host daily R&D broadband demonstrations, allowing visitors to see first-hand how ICTs are being applied, revolutionizing critical sectors such as health care, security and education.

The Canadian Advanced Technology Alliance (CATA) is a key partner with the Government of Canada in realizing Canada's presence at this prestigious event.

ITU Telecom World is considered the Olympics of telecommunications and takes place every three years. This is the first time that it is being held outside of Geneva.
