Downloading Acrobat

Finally, many documents on this site are PDF (Portable Document Format) files. To view them, you will need:

Download the free Adobe Acrobat Reader by following these steps:

If you don't already have the Adobe Acrobat Reader you will have to go to the Adobe Acrobat site to download it. It is as easy as clicking a button that looks just like this one: (You may click this button get adobe acrobat and go to the Adobe site, but we suggest you read the rest of these instructions first and print them off, so you will have the steps in case you get stuck along the way.)

Follow the instructions included with Acrobat Reader software to install Acrobat Reader on your computer. Then, click any *.pdf file to view, navigate, or print it!

If there is a failure at any point during the installation of Acrobat Reader, the installer performs a complete uninstall. For this reason, it is important not to close the installer application by clicking its close box in the upper right corner of the background window after clicking the "Thank You" dialog box that appears at the end of the installation. If you wait for a second or two, the installer will automatically close the background windows after the installation is complete.

Once the download is finished, navigate your way to the directory that the file was saved into. The *.exe file is a self-extracting file. This means that when it is opened, it will begin with a setup wizard that will guide you through the setup process. Make sure that you install the program in a directory that you will easily remember.

When the *.exe file is opened a message box will appear asking you if you wish to continue. Select YES. The installshield window will open, and then the setup box will open. You will have to do nothing, as the computer is only installing the necessary files for you.

Step 1: Is a welcome screen. This is an introduction. At the bottom of the window are two buttons. Select the one that says NEXT>.

Step 2: Is the software license agreement. Assuming you agree to what they state, select the YES button. If you do not agree with what they state the setup will be cancelled.

Step 3: Choose the destination of your files. You can select the default folder, or one of your own choosing. To select your own folder, press the BROWSE button, and navigate your way to the correct folder. When you are finished selecting a folder, or have decided to accept the default one, press the NEXT> button to continue.

Step 4: The next window to appear is the Setup Complete window. You have completed the setup process. Press the FINISH button, and then the OK button.

Opening PDF files from the internet

The following are instructions on how to retrieve, and view *.pdf files from the Internet. It is important to follow each step, as deviations may produce corrupt files, which will then be unreadable. The complete instructions are on the Adobe website. For your convenience, we have included them here as well.

By clicking on the acrobat button, this will bring you to the Adobe homepage where you can download the free *.pdf reader. The free Adobe Acrobat Reader will allow you to read, and print, *.pdf files.

Opening your *.pdf files is relatively easy once you have the necessary software installed. Save your *.pdf files that you wish to view, or print, to a directory that you will know where they are. Open the Adobe Acrobat Reader and choose the File menu from the menu bar at the top of the opened Adobe Acrobat Reader window. In the File menu, select the Open option (CTRL + O). This will open a small window that will allow you to choose a *.pdf file, or navigate your way through your system to where you store your *.pdf files. Select the *.pdf file that you wish to open and press the OPEN button.

Once the file is opened in the reader, it will appear as any other text document opened in their corresponding viewer. The interface is much like Microsoft Word, or Corel WordPerfect.

To print the selected file, you choose File from the second menu bar at the top of the window, and then select Print from the choices (CTRL + P). A small window will open with various choices. Some of the choices are PRINT, CANCEL, OPTIONS, Print Range, Print Quality, or Print to File. These choices operate in a similar fashion to any other print menu for other programs.

Please note that all of the above external sites are not a part, nor the responsibility, of the Division of Aging and Seniors or the Public Health Agency of Canada. While we will be able to answer some questions on the above utilities, it is your responsibility to familiarize yourself with their installation and use, as well as accept any issues regarding the registration/purchase of any of the software packages. Any difficulties you have with those sites or the software you retrieve from them should be directed to the managers of those sites.

Searching / Viewing / Retrieving / Saving

Using the Search, you can usually find what you are looking for quickly. You can search by document titles, or keywords that you think relate to what you are looking for.

Once you have found the document, you may have several choices on what to do next. In cases where the document is available in HTML format, you may view it online by clicking clicking HTML or the text link.

Some documents may have been converted to PDF PDF - to view these, you will need the Adobe Acrobat reader available above. If you have installed Acrobat correctly, the document will download and open into the reader automatically by simply clicking on the icon.

Depending on your operating system and web-browser, you may be able to set up associations so that when you click on the icon, your browser will download the file and automatically decompress it with your unzipping utility. (If you are not familiar with file association, have your Computer Support section provide you with assistance.)

If your system does not allow this automated association, or if you want to keep copies of the original .zip files on disk, you will want to save the files directly without opening them. This process varies from browser to browser, but in most cases, when holding down the SHIFT key while clicking on the icon, or, if your mouse has more than one button, RIGHT clicking on the icon, you will be prompted to save to disk.

In the most recent version of Netscape, the option is "Save Link As...". In the most recent version of Internet Explorer, the option is "Save Target As...". Other browsers may offer similar options, if they allow this feature. Select the directory/folder you wish to save in, and the file will be downloaded, and that's it. If you decide you want to view it, you would then have to start up the unzipping utility and decompress the file.

The benefit to this is you can save a group of files, one after the other, then disconnect from the Internet and unzip/view the documents on your own time.
