Minimum Qualifications:

Candidates must fully demonstrate in their application that they meet all of the minimum qualifications.

Occupational Certification:

  • Possession of a valid Canadian Commercial Pilot Licence - Helicopter OR Possession of a valid Canadian Airline Transport Pilot Licence – Helicopter

  • Possession of a valid and unrestricted LVC - licence validation certificate (medical)

  • Valid Restricted Radio-Telephone Operator Certificate-endorsed aeronautical

  • Possession of or previously held Helicopter Instrument Rating

Experience:

At a minimum, your must possess the following experience:

  • Experience on one or more of the following helicopter types: BH06, BH12, BO105, S61

  • A minimum of 2000 hours as a PIC (pilot-in-command) on helicopters

Depending on the position, you may also be requested to possess one or more of the following experience:

  • Shipboard operations
  • Vertical reference slinging operations
  • Hoisting operations
  • Sling/external load operations
  • Arctic flying
  • Coastal Canada
  • Flight operations
  • Approved company check pilot
  • Operations managers, chief pilot or training pilot
  • 500 hours as Multi Engine Pilot in Command
  • 300 hours of instrument flight time of which 100 hours must be actual instrument flight time

Functions:

A Helicopter Pilot is responsible for the following:

  • Pre-planning flight operations through verifications of information relating to weather, aircraft condition, load and balance, external load assignments;

  • Briefing flight crew and ground personnel on proposed exercises;

  • Briefing passengers on emergency equipment and responses to in-flight emergencies;

  • Reviewing flight manifests on passengers and cargo;

  • Preparing and –filing flight plans, notifications or itineraries;

  • Carrying out helicopter flight operations;

  • Assuming command over all personnel on board the helicopter;

  • Carrying out the duties of Pollution Prevention Officer under the Canada Shipping and Arctic Waters Pollution Prevention Acts;

  • Completing daily reports, journey logs and other returns

About the Organization:

Flight Operations Pilots (Rotary Wing) at Transport Canada work within the Aircraft Services Directorate of the Safety and Security Group. The Civil Aviation headquarters directorate determines program content, policy and standards, while the regions deliver the program.

The Aircraft Services Directorate is responsible for the provision of aircraft and services in support of Transport Canada operations, as well as selected programs of other federal government departments and agencies.

We operate and maintain a fleet of 38 fixed and 37 rotary wing aircraft to support Transport Canada and Coast Guard operations, the operations of other federal government and agencies, and external clients. The aircraft are located at seven fixed wing and eleven rotary wing aircraft bases across Canada, with major overhaul work conducted at the main base located in Ottawa, Ontario.

The Aircraft Services Directorate is responsible for the management and operation of the Canadian Coast Guard Helicopter fleet. This consists of 27 helicopters, which are located at 11 bases across Canada.

Within the Aircraft Service Directorate, the Flight Operations Branch is responsible for all Transport Canada flight operations and the development of policies and operating directives governing this activity to ensure the safe and efficient operation of all fixed and rotary wing aircraft.
