Flight Simulator Technician

Group & Level: EL-04 (EL = Electronics)

IMPORTANT: This is the only work locations for the Flight Simulator Technician position. Please note that when submitting your application, the form may contain other work location selections across Canada.

Minimum Qualifications:

Candidates must fully demonstrate in their application that they meet all of the minimum qualifications.

Education:

  • A secondary school diploma; AND

  • Completion of an acceptable training program in electronics technology or an acceptable combination of education, training and/or experience.

Experience

  • Experience in avionics, aircraft systems and installations

  • Experience in the operation and maintenance of full flight simulators that are certified to Level “D” Transport Canada or equivalent flight training devices (FTD)

  • Experience in software programming and troubleshooting

Functions:

Under the guidance of a Supervisor, the Flight Simulator Technician is responsible for the following:

  • Performing routine maintenance to flight simulator systems and functional simulator pre-flights including flight test and operation of systems;

  • Isolating, identifying and repairing or replacing defective components as well as adjusting and calibrating equipment to meet functional performance standards;

  • Selecting and attaching test equipment to measure circuit characteristics in accordance with standard procedures;

  • Analyzing aircraft systems and simulation software in response to deficiencies and engineering change requests as generated by training staff. Researching, designing and implementing required modifications;

  • Analyzing and sources data required for development or modification of new or existing visual databases. Implements required changes using software tools and integration techniques;

  • Developing automated lesson plans in conjunction with instructor pilots for use of in-flight training;

  • Interfacing with flight crews to discuss performance of simulator during and after training exercises;

  • Identifying equipment design deficiencies and recommending solutions and subsequently initiatives modifications to system hardware and software;

  • Ensuring that all simulator and equipment maintenance forms, logs, records and tags are properly filled out and signed;

  • Reviewing and editing drawing, schematics, operating instructions and test procedures prior to submission for final approval. Writing technical reports and advising the Supervisor on system performance and supply requirements;

  • Providing full time response to problems involving safety and protection of the premises and equipment.

About the Organization:

Flight Simulator Technicians at Transport Canada work within the Aircraft Services Directorate of the Safety and Security Group. The Civil Aviation headquarters directorate determines program contents, policy and standards, while the regions deliver the program.

Aircraft Services Directorate is responsible for the provision of aircraft and services in support of Transport Canada operations, as well, as selected programs of other federal government departments and agencies.

Aircraft Services operates and maintains a fleet of 45 fixed and 35 rotary wing aircraft to support Transport Canada operations, the operations of other federal government and agencies, and external clients. The aircraft are located at seven fixed wing and eleven rotary wing aircraft bases across Canada, with major overhaul work conducted at the main base located in Ottawa, Ontario.

The Training Branch of the Aircraft Services Directorate is responsible for all Transport Canada flight operations and the development of policies and operating directives governing this activity to ensure the safe and efficient operation of all fixed and rotary wing aircraft.
