SESSION DESCRIPTIONS AND CHAIRS - Technical Program

Oil and Gas in Canada's North -  Yvon Lemieux and Len Gal - Talk Schedule
This year's oil and gas technical session will feature geoscientific studies related to petroleum exploration and development in the Mackenzie Corridor and Beaufort/Delta. Industry and government speakers will highlight and summarize exploration activity in the NWT over the last year, and research in Yukon’s Peel Plateau will be presented.

NWT - NU Geoscience/Mineral Exploration - Hendrik Falck- Talk Schedule
The Mineral Exploration and Mapping session is a blend of exploration,
regional mapping, and research in the Northwest Territories and Nunavut. This theme-oriented session will highlight exciting new discoveries, current trends in the mineral industry, and showcase research projects that may help to identify priority areas in the north for future exploration.

Environment Sciences - David Livingstone -
Talk Schedule
T
he Environmental Sciences session will focus on topics of direct
relevance to the interests and activities of the oil and gas and mining sectors, including permafrost, hydrology, wildlife, reclamation, contaminants, traditional environmental knowledge, monitoring and management programs and related themes.

Kimberlites and Diamonds of the Canadian North - Hamish Sandeman - Talk Schedule
A diverse selection of Industry, Government and University oral and poster presentations on Diamond/Kimberlite research, exploration and mining in Canada’s North.

Iron Oxide Copper-Gold (IOCG) Type Deposits - Louise Corriveau and Hamid Mumin - Talk Schedule
Iron Oxide Copper-Gold (Co-Ag-Bi-U) (IOCG) is a deposit type with very large resource potential that remains significantly under-explored in Canada. The two known Canadian IOCG deposits with calculated resources occur in the southern Great Bear Magmatic Zone of the Wopmay Orogen. Their occurrence and that of many new targets underscore the importance of this belt as a highly prospective terrane. This session will present current knowledge on the deposit type and prospective IOCG systems in the belt and elsewhere in the world, and identify priorities for future exploration and public geoscience. The session will provide a good introduction for the ensuing short course.

Reducing Risk and Mitigating Environmental Impact: Integrating Geoscience into Baseline Studies During and Pre- Mine Development - Velma Sterenberg and John Kwong - Talk Schedule
The concept of geo-environmental modeling of mineral deposits, formalized in the early ‘90’s, has been successfully applied to mine reclamation and land use applications world wide. This session will demonstrate how cost effective collection and management of a mining camp geoscience data set, from exploration to development, can significantly mitigate financial and environmental risk to mine operations.

Regulatory Issues - Kelly Emon and Kelly Mahoney - Talk Schedule
T
his session presents updates on the various regulations, guidelines, processes and other activities that impact mineral exploration and development in the NWT. A variety of speakers will provide information about current and upcoming issues such as land claims, board proceedings and review processes that are relevant to anyone doing business or interested in doing business in the NWT. This is a great opportunity to hear the latest and ask questions.

Posters - Doug Irwin and Will Zantvoort   - Posters
This year's poster session promises to be a potluck of delectable presentations that cover a wide range of subjects.

New this year:  Soap Box” Talks.   Poster presenters are being given the option to give a scheduled 5 minute presentation in front of their poster during the Poster Session.  Due to interest and the limited time, presentations may be given concurrently.   If you wish to use this option, please indicate with your abstract or discuss with the Poster Session coordinators

With their very large resource potential and polymetallic nature, iron oxide copper-gold (Co-Ag-Bi-U) (IOCG) deposits are becoming a key exploration target in Canada. Tracers of mineralization have significant lateral and vertical extent, including diagnostic alteration zones, overprinting relationships, structural control and geophysical and geochemical signatures. The Great Bear Magmatic Zone of the Wopmay Orogen hosts many past-producing and recently discovered IOCG-associated uranium, silver, copper and polymetallic deposits, as well as a host of excellent prospects. In spite of past and current success along the belt, the Great Bear Magmatic Zone remains largely unexplored.

This short course aims at sharing knowledge from those who are currently working in the Great Bear Magmatic Zone with those who would like to join in or explore in other parts of Canada. It presents IOCG deposits from around the world, with a focus on the Great Bear and its well-exposed IOCG associated mineralization, alteration and structures. Particular attention will be paid to alteration mapping as vectors to mineralization and exploration methodologies and techniques that have proven successful along the belt.
