Political Relations
The Political Section coordinates Canada and Germanys
relations with each other as countries, as well as their
wide-ranging cooperation on global issues. It monitors
significant developments in German and European politics
and in foreign and security policy, particularly as
they may affect Canadian interests, providing analysis
and briefings to decisionmakers in Ottawa and the provinces,
as well as to other Canadian stakeholders. The officers
of the Political Section are in constant contact with
the German Foreign Office, other government ministries,
parliamentarians, NGOs and the media, advocating Canadian
interests and concerns, as well as facilitating enhanced
cooperation between the two countries in areas such
as arms control, peace support operations, and the work
of institutions such as the UN, G8 and NATO.
The Political Section is also responsible, in conjunction
with other Embassy colleagues, for preparing visits
by high-level Canadian officials to Germany. Since the
fall of 2001, the Section has worked on visits to Germany
by the Governor General, the Prime Minister and Team
Canada, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, and the Chief
Justice of the Supreme Court of Canada. In addition,
the Section regularly organizes visits by senior officials
from DFAIT, other federal government departments and
provincial governments, to promote Canada-Germany relations,
raise Canada's profile among German decisionmakers and
the public, and identify areas where Canadians and Germans
could benefit from each others best practices.
