Visas and Immigration

Welcome to the internet site of the Visa Section of the Canadian Embassy in Jakarta. This site has been designed to give you basic information on visiting or living in Canada.

Visa Fraud Warning

The Canadian Embassy in Jakarta would like to advise the general public of several schemes which fraudulently promise Canadian visas and employment in Canada. These fraudulent activities include the use of newspaper advertisements and the internet to solicit their clients. Their fees are usually very high, but any visas by these schemes are counterfeit and do not grant entry into Canada. For more information, please click here.

Immigration Representatives
Who May Represent You?

Are you:

  • Applying for a visa or making any other application under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act?
  • Undergoing a proceeding or hearing for an immigration or refugee matter?

In some cases, individuals who wish to come to, or stay in, Canada have a representative provide them with additional support or advice.

Remember you are not obliged to hire a representative for immigration and refugee matters. The Government of Canada treats everyone equally, whether they use the services of a representative or not. There are two types of representatives: paid and unpaid.

Consult the following website to find more information about paid and unpaid representatives: http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/department/consultants/index.html

VISITING CANADA

Do I need a visa and where can I apply?

Indonesia and Timor-Leste - Citizens of these countries require a temporary resident visa to enter Canada. If you reside in Indonesia or Timor-Leste you should apply at the Canadian Embassy in Jakarta.

Other Countries - If you are a citizen of another country, please check the main CIC website to see if you need a temporary resident visa to travel to Canada. If you do, please apply to the office which services the country in which you are resident.

What types of temporary resident visas are available?

A single entry visa allows you to enter Canada only once. The visa may also be used for repeated entries into Canada from the USA within the time allowed for your stay in Canada.

A multiple entry visa allows you to enter Canada from any country as often as you wish during the validity of the visa. The maximum validity of a multiple entry visa is five years, or to one month prior to the passport expiry date, whichever is shorter. A multiple entry visa is ideal for frequent travellers.

A transit visa is required for travel through Canada to another country by those persons who need a temporary resident visa and whose flight will stop in Canada for less than 48 hours. To obtain a transit visa you must provide specific evidence of your travel arrangements from your airline. Transit visas are free of charge.

International seafarers travelling to Canada to join ships as crew members require a valid passport for entry as well as a seafarer's identity document. They also require a temporary resident visa, unless they are citizens of a country that is exempt from the requirement.

How do I apply for a temporary resident visa?

You may submit your application to the Visa Section of the Canadian Embassy in Jakarta from Monday to Friday between 8:30 and 11:30 a.m:

Do I require a medical examination?

Generally, no medical examination is required for persons travelling to Canada for less than six months.

For persons travelling to Canada for six months or more, medical examinations are required if you have lived in a designated country or territory for six consecutive months or more during the twelve months preceding your visa application. Indonesia and Timor-Leste are both designated countries. For information on other countries, please click here.

If you require a medical examination, you will be given medical forms and detailed instructions after you have submitted your visa application.

How long can I stay in Canada?

When you arrive in Canada, the immigration officer will determine whether you may enter Canada and how long you may stay. You must leave Canada on or before the date set by the immigration officer. Generally, you are allowed to stay in Canada for a maximum of six months. Under special circumstances you may be allowed to extend your visit. This is only possible if you apply before the end of your authorized stay. Contact a CIC Call Centre in Canada for more information.

IMMIGRATING TO CANADA

The Visa Section in Jakarta does not process applications for permanent residence in Canada, and will not reply to enquiries about immigrating to Canada. Applications for permanent residence from residents of Indonesia and Timor-Leste are processed by the Canadian High Commission in Singapore. For complete information on Canada’s immigration programs, please refer to http://www.cic.gc.ca.

STUDYING IN CANADA

Once you have obtained your study permit, click here for additional information.

What is a study permit?

A study permit is a form issued by an immigration officer. It allows you, after your admittance, to remain in Canada to take an academic, professional or vocational training course at an approved university, college or other institution. If you are not a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident of Canada you must obtain a study permit. If you require a temporary resident visa to enter Canada, the visa officer will issue it at the same time as the documentation necessary for your entry as a student. A study permit is not required if the course is less than six months in length. Before you apply for a study permit, you must be accepted as a student by an approved educational institution.

TEMPORARY EMPLOYMENT IN CANADA

As a general rule, if you have the intention of taking temporary employment in Canada, you must first be processed for a work permit before proceeding to Canada. You can only do so when employment has been offered to you and your potential employer has applied to the Human Resources Development Canada (HRDC) office in the city where employment is offered. This process is called confirmation of offer of employment. Once this has been confirmed by HRDC, HRDC will send a copy of the confirmation to your employer in Canada. The employer should then forward this confirmation to you. Only when you have this confirmation should you approach the visa office responsible for non-immigrant processing for the country in which you reside.

Live-In Caregiver Program - A live-in caregiver is a person who will be hired to provide child care, care for elderly persons, or care of the disabled, without supervision, in a private household. The live-in caregiver is required to reside in the employer's home. Under Canada's immigration law, a work permit may be granted to experienced and qualified live-in caregivers who are able to perform the duties of the job that they have been offered.

All applicants for temporary employment in Canada must also meet Canadian health and security requirements and any other requirements for temporary entry into Canada that may be in force at the time the application is submitted. Also, employers may require other specific qualifications related to the work to be performed.

For more information, please see the main website of Citizenship and Immigration Canada.

TRAVEL DOCUMENTS FOR PERMANENT RESIDENTS OF CANADA

As of December 31, 2003, Canadian permanent residents require a permanent resident card when returning to Canada by commercial carrier (airplane, boat, train or bus). A permanent resident is someone who has been allowed to enter Canada as an immigrant but who has not become a Canadian citizen.

The permanent resident card replaces the paper IMM 1000 Record of Landing document and will be the official proof of status document for Canadian permanent residents.

Existing permanent residents must be in Canada to apply for the permanent resident card. Application and information kits are available on Citizenship and Immigration Canada’s Web site at http://www.cic.gc.ca.

Canadian permanent residents presently located outside of Canada, who do not have a permanent resident card and who will be returning to Canada, should visit a Canadian visa office to obtain a limited-use travel document at a cost of CAD $50.00

To qualify for a travel document, you must demonstrate that you have met the residency obligations of a permanent resident of Canada. Generally, this means demonstrating that you have been physically present in Canada for at least two of the past five years; however, there are other circumstances under which a travel document could be issued. Please refer to http://www.cic.gc.ca for detailed information about your residency obligations, and to obtain application forms.

What if my visa is refused?
