2006 Association of American Indian Physicians Diabetes Program
Mini-Grants

The Association of American Indian Physicians Diabetes Program is offering $1,000.00 mini-grants to implement community-based lifestyle interventions targeting the American Indian and Alaska Native communities during National Diabetes Awareness Month this November.

Congratulations to the 2005 Mini Grant Awardees for the completion of their Diabetes Awareness activities and events! The AAIP Diabetes Program wishes you and your programs continued success. A special congratulations is extended to the 2005 Outstanding Model Programs that were identified at the 35th AAIP Annual Meeting in August, 2005: The Sisseton Wahpeton Oyate Health and Fitness Center and the American Indian Health Services.

The 2005 Mini Grant recipients and their activities were:

  • Wagner Area Health and Wellness Consortium, Wagner, South Dakota- This organization conducted a mini pow-wow and health fair.
  • Annette Island Service Unit, Sitka, Alaska- This organization conducted a mini health fair.
  • The Cheyenne-Arapaho Tribes of Oklahoma, Concho, Oklahoma- Traditional speakers were utilized to promote positive and healthy lifestyles for a nine county collaborative event.
  • Riverside Indian School, Anadarko, Oklahoma- The school hosted a basketball tournament for their students.
  • Sisseton Wahpeton Oyate Health and Fitness Center, Agency Village, South Dakota- The centered hosted a Veterans Day Pow Wow and incorporated health screenings.
  • Choctaw Nation Diabetes Wellness Center, Talihina, Oklahoma- They hosted two events, “Native American Game Day” and provided nutrition classes to youth.
  • American Indian Health and Services, Santa Barbara, California- They implemented the creation of the Possibles Pouch Project where participants created medicine bags and conducted talking circles while receiving diabetes education.
