Kenojuak Ashevak, one of Canada's most prominent Inuit artists, visited Germany from March 25-April 04 as a special guest to attend celebrations for the 5th anniversary of the establishment of Nunavut. Heidrun Richter, Cultural Director of the German-Canadian Society (DKG) organized the programme of events which took Ashevak and her interpreter, Jimmy Manning, artist and manager of the West Baffin Art Cooperative, to various cities. Arriving from Cape Dorset, Nunavut, their first stop was Burg Vischering, near Muenster, where Ashevak's first comprehensive retrospective in Europe is showing until May 9th, 2004. Their hosts, and initiators of the show, were Ansgar and Ulrike Walk who have visited Nunavut frequently and are avid collectors of her work. Experts on Inuit art and gallery owners from all over Germany and Switzerland came to meet the renowned Inuit artist and to admire her work. Her second stop was Hamburg as the guest of honour at a Nunavut evening hosted by the DKG at the Ethnological Museum.
