Minimum Qualifications:

Candidates must fully demonstrate in their application that they meet all of the minimum qualifications.

Education/Certification:

  • Valid Aircraft Maintenance Engineer licence category E
  • A diploma in an acceptable training program in electronics technology

Experience:

Depending on the position, candidates may be required to possess recent experience in one or more of the following:

  • Maintenance of navigation systems
  • Maintenance of communications systems
  • Maintenance of autoflight systems
  • Avionics modifications and installations
  • Maintenance of instrument and electrical systems

Functions:

Under the guidance of a Team Leader, the Aircraft Maintenance Engineer - Avionics System is responsible for the following:

  • Carries out scheduled maintenance, testing, inspections, installations, modifications, component changes, and calibrations, of complex avionics and electrical systems and equipment on fixed and rotary wing aircraft; evaluates system and equipment performance against manufacturers specifications in accordance with the applicable regulations.

  • Carries out unscheduled maintenance, repairs, inspections, component changes, and calibrations, of complex avionics and electrical systems and equipment on fixed and rotary wing aircraft, as a result of malfunctions reported by flight crews, faults identified during scheduled maintenance, incidents such as lightning strikes, or mandated through Airworthiness Directives; investigates, analyses and resolves avionics and electrical systems faults through testing and troubleshooting.

  • Carries out scheduled and unscheduled off aircraft maintenance, repairs, modifications, overhauls, and inspections, of electromechanical, electrical and electronic components, and aircraft nickel cadmium batteries, and evaluates equipment performance against manufacturers requirements.

  • Uploads, downloads, troubleshoots and configures avionics computer system software; interprets avionics and electrical system status and identifies system and components faults through the use of on board computer based diagnostic systems.

  • Completes, for all system and equipment maintenance carried out both on and off aircraft, all paperwork required by the Canadian Aviation Regulations (CARs) and Aircraft Services Maintenance Control Manual (MCM). Recommends for certification, or certifies through the signing of a maintenance release, the completion of work, and that the work performed on avionics equipment and system components is in accordance with the applicable regulatory requirements.

  • Provides expert technical guidance, instructions and advice to ASD personnel and clients on system operation and equipment problems.

  • Fabricates wiring harnesses, and installs new avionics systems or modifies existing avionics and electrical systems on all fixed and rotary wing aircraft.

  • Maintains and repairs ground support equipment.

About the Organization:

Aircraft Maintenance Engineers (Avionics Systems) at Transport Canada work within the Aircraft Services Directorate of the Safety and Security Group. The Civil Aviation headquarters directorate determines program contents, policy and standards, while the regions deliver the program.

Aircraft Services Directorate is responsible for the provision of aircraft and services in support of Transport Canada operations, as well, as selected programs of other federal government departments and agencies.

Aircraft Services operates and maintains a large fleet of 45 fixed and 35 rotary wing aircraft to support Transport Canada operations, the operations of other federal government and agencies, and external clients. The aircraft are located at seven fixed wing and eleven rotary wing aircraft bases across Canada, with major work conducted at the main base located in Ottawa, Ontario.

The Technical Services Branch of Aircraft Services is responsible for maintaining this fleet of aircraft to airworthiness standards necessary for compliance with the Operating Certificate, and for providing the aircraft on time for use by Aircraft Services clients. The Branch operates an approved maintenance organization with components involved in aircraft maintenance, aircraft maintenance analysis and planning, logistic support, overhaul and component repair, aircraft refinishing and quality assurance.
