Avionics Workshop Technician

Group & Level: EL-05 (EL = Electronics)

Minimum Qualifications:

Candidates must fully demonstrate in their application that they meet all of the minimum qualifications.

Education/Certification:

  • A diploma in a training program in electronics technology with specialization in avionics technology, or an acceptable combination of education, training and/or experience.

Experience:

Depending on the position, candidates may be required to possess recent experience in one or more of the following:

  • Maintenance of navigation systems
  • Maintenance of communications systems
  • Maintenance of autoflight systems
  • Maintenance of pulse equipment
  • Maintenance of instruments

Job Functions:

  • Carries out unscheduled specialized bench maintenance, testing, alignment, calibrations, and repairs, to the component level, of complex avionics systems, instruments and electromechanical equipment removed from fixed and rotary wing aircraft, as a result of malfunctions reported by flight crews, faults identified during scheduled maintenance, or mandated through Airworthiness Directives; investigates, analyses and resolves avionics systems, instruments and electromechanical equipment faults through testing and troubleshooting.

  • Carries out scheduled specialized bench maintenance, testing, inspections, overhauls, calibrations, and modifications, to the component level, of complex avionics systems, instruments and electromechanical equipment removed from fixed and rotary wing aircraft; evaluates system and equipment performance against manufacturers requirements and technical specifications in accordance with the applicable regulations.

  • Completes, for all system and equipment maintenance carried out, all paperwork required by the Canadian Aviation Regulations (CARs) and Aircraft Services Maintenance Control Manual (MCM). Recommends for certification, or certifies through the signing of a maintenance release, the completion of work, and that the work performed on avionics equipment and system components is in accordance with the applicable regulatory requirements.

  • Uploads, downloads, troubleshoots and configures avionics computer system software; interprets avionics system and equipment status and identifies system and component faults through the use of automatic test equipment; installs/integrates computer hardware.

  • Designs and fabricates test benches required for the testing, troubleshooting and calibration of avionics systems, instruments and electromechanical equipment; revises test bench related schematic drawings.

  • Provides expert technical guidance, instructions and advice to personnel and clients on specific system operation and equipment problems.

  • Develops, writes and revises equipment bench test procedures for inclusion into Aircraft Services Maintenance Control Manual (MCM) Procedure 39.

About the Organization:

Avionics Workshop Technicians at Transport Canada work within the Aircraft Services Directorate of the Safety and Security Group. The Civil Aviation headquarters directorate determines program contents, policy and standards, while the regions deliver the program.

Aircraft Services Directorate is responsible for the provision of aircraft and services in support of Transport Canada operations, as well, as selected programs of other federal government departments and agencies.

Aircraft Services operates and maintains a fleet of 45 fixed and 35 rotary wing aircraft to support Transport Canada operations, the operations of other federal government and agencies, and external clients. The aircraft are located at seven fixed wing and eleven rotary wing aircraft bases across Canada, with major overhaul work conducted at the main base located in Ottawa, Ontario.

The Technical Services Branch of Aircraft Services is responsible for maintaining Transport Canada's fixed wing and helicopter fleet to airworthiness standards necessary for compliance with the Operating Certificate, and for providing those aircraft on time for use by Aircraft Services clients. The Branch operates an approved maintenance organization with components involved in aircraft maintenance planning, aircraft maintenance analysis and planning, logistic support, overhaul and component repair, aircraft refinishing and quality assurance.
