RCMP and Transport Canada
on Safe Boating Patrol in Indian Arm

The North Vancouver and Coquitlam RCMP officers, and other enforcement authorities can now issue tickets to boating offenders on the spot, instead of requiring them to appear in court. Under the Contraventions Act, an agreement signed by the governments of Canada and British Columbia, tickets can be issued for offences such as not having the required safety equipment on board, disobeying speed limits, or careless operation of a vessel. In the six Canadian provinces where the Contraventions Act has been implemented, there has been a substantial improvement overall in the level of compliance and consequently, boating safety.

There will be a media briefing on the new ticketing system and a photo opportunity at the Cates Park boat launch at 12:00 p.m. on June 24th and June 25th. After the briefing, media are invited to join the RCMP in patrolling the Indian Arm onboard the RCMP vessels. Due to the limited capacity onboard the vessels, please RSVP by Friday, June 23 at 12:00 p.m. to (604) 666-5607, if you would like to join the RCMP on patrol.

Directions from Vancouver:
From Vancouver, take the Trans Canada Highway into North Vancouver over the Second Narrows Bridge. Make an immediate right, and head East on Dollarton Highway for 5.3km. Cates Park is the first right after Roche Point Drive.

Date: Saturday, June 24, 2006 and Sunday, June 25, 2006
Time: 12:00 p.m.
Location: Cates Park Boat Launch
North Vancouver
