Our Mission“To work in partnership to help improve the quality of life of Nunavummiut through economic and social development, environmental stewardship and effective management of natural resources.” A Message from the Regional Director GeneralThis is an exciting time for Nunavut. Since its creation in 1999, the territory has experienced consistent economic and population growth and is poised for continued expansion in key sectors of the economy, such as mining, construction, services, and transportation. Investments in public infrastructure have brought new schools, health centres and a hospital to Nunavut and have also made possible broadband Internet access. Local and regional social and cultural development efforts are preparing Nunavummiut to take advantage of economic opportunities while remaining firmly rooted in their culture. Our Nunavut Regional Office offers a variety of programs and services and is responsible for a number of key regulatory activities in Nunavut. We work with Nunavummiut to develop local and territorial economies, manage land and water, and improve Nunavut’s capacity to respond to local, regional, and national challenges. Specifically, our work includes managing and regulating sustainable resource development; preserving and protecting the environment; remediating contaminated sites; and making and managing investments in community economic, skills, and cultural development. We also support the positive and productive relationship shared by the Government of Canada and the Government of Nunavut, and work with a number of territorial stakeholders, such as Nunavut Tunngavik Incorporated, to implement the Nunavut Land Claims Agreement. The Nunavut Regional Office is a dedicated group of experienced and capable employees anxious to work with our clients and partners to improve the quality of life of all Nunavummiut. We welcome your involvement in our efforts to respond to all of the challenges and opportunities before Nunavut.
Michael Nadler Our Regional StrategyKingulinga - The Next Phase 2003-2006 Kingulinga 2003/06 is Indian and Northern Affairs Canada (INAC) Nunavut Regional Office’s third strategic plan since its transition from the Nunavut Secretariat. The INAC Nunavut Regional Office has evolved over its four years of operation. The focus and objective of its strategic plan have too. With each passing year, the INAC Nunavut Regional Office has strengthened its operational capacity while adopting a broader planning horizon. In Tukimut 2001/02, the focus was on critical activities to ensure a successful transition including the assumption of resource management responsibilities from the Northwest Territories Regional Office. The following year, Tukimut 2002/2003 took a more comprehensive approach to reflect Nunavut Regional Office’s multi-faceted role and outlined key goals and objectives across its operations. This third and latest strategic plan is laid out over three years and includes a strategic framework to help guide the INAC Nunavut Regional Office to 2006. It also outlines the strategic planning process that flows from the Departmental Report on Plans and Priorities down to individual directorate work plans. As well, a section of the strategic plan describes the northern operating environment in terms of political, economic, social and natural environmental realities. Finally, the plan provides insight into the Nunavut Regional Office as it relates to its evolution, structure and mandate. This strategic plan is intended to be a living document that will serve as a beacon to guide the Nunavut Regional Office towards its ultimate goal: To work in partnership to help improve the quality of life of Nunavummiut through economic and social development, environmental stewardship, and effective management of natural resources. Our OfficesThe Indian and Northern Affairs Canada Nunavut Regional Office has five different office locations throughout the territory. Three of these offices are located in Iqaluit, one in Rankin Inlet, and one in Kugluktuk.
