Transport Canada, in cooperation with provincial governments and safety organizations, continues its efforts to improve road safety in the Atlantic Region. The Department plays a partnership role in ensuring a safe and efficient National Highway System in Atlantic Canada. Highway infrastructure improvements are made through the Strategic Highway Infrastructure Program.

Transport Canada is the major source of regulatory development, information and guidance on road safety issues and on the transportation of dangerous goods in particular. The Department works with the industry to improve the safety and efficiency of the transportation system, and to ensure compliance with standards, rules and regulations.

The department is also responsible for the administration of various agreements for the Confederation Bridge.
