International Day of the World's Indigenous People
In its resolution
49/214 of December 23rd, 1994, the General Assembly designated August
9th to be observed as International Day of the World's Indigenous People
every year during the International Decade. This occasion will be used
by the United Nations to draw attention to indigenous issues and societies.
It represents an opportunity for Governments, non-governmental organizations
and other interested groups to organize activities which raise awareness
about indigenous people and their cultures.
