Where can I get information on the transportation of dangerous goods?

The Canadian Transport Emergency Centre, or CANUTEC, provides vital information to emergency personnel responding to transportation accidents involving dangerous goods. CANUTEC also offers information on all aspects of regulatory requirements for the transportation of dangerous goods. Does Transport Canada have a research and development program?

The Transportation Development Centre (TDC) is Transport Canada's research arm. Working closely with contractors, TDC staff manage the technical aspects of each project, control finances and evaluate progress. They also ensure that the end products of the program - technical data and research reports, equipment designs, laboratory hardware, computer software and prototype transportation systems - find application in the Canadian transportation network. Who is responsible for accident investigations?

The Transportation Safety Board of Canada conducts independent investigations and, if necessary, public inquiries into air, marine, rail and pipeline occurrences in order to make findings as to their causes and contributing factors. For more information, call (613) 994 3741.

Under provincial authority, police forces investigate motor vehicle accidents on public roads, as well as accidents involving off road vehicles. Using contracted teams of specialists based at universities across Canada, Transport Canada's Road Safety and Motor Vehicle Regulation  Directorate investigates a selected sample of motor vehicle accidents annually to support development and evaluation of safety standards.
