What steps do I take to file an application?

For an easier understanding of how to obtain IP protection, the subject of this chapter is presented in the form of frequently asked questions.

Note that, in addition to accepting applications and other documents by mail or by fax, CIPO now offers electronic services to clients. Applications and certain other documents for patents, trade-marks, copyrights, industrial designs and integrated circuit topographies may now be sent on-line. You may find a summary of these electronic services offered on CIPO's Web site under the topic "On-line Forms." Additional information on obtaining protection under Plant Breeders' Rights from the Plant Breeders' Rights Office (PBRO), which is part of the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA), may be obtained by visiting CFIA's Web site under the key topic "Plant Breeders' Rights".
