What do we do?Land Administration falls under DIAND's Operations Directorate. It administers the field activities of the Department in the NWT in accordance with applicable legislation. The division also serves as the field contact for external clients, including the members of the public, industry and First Nation organizations. Our responsibilities include regulating and managing surface land activities pursuant to the Territorial Lands Act, the Federal Real Property Act, and responding to land claim settlement legislation. These activities include environmental screening according to the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act, consultation, the maintenance of over 8,500 land records and the maintenance of an automated Land Information Management System (LIMS). We administer Crown land according to the following legislation:

The Mackenzie Valley Land Use Regulations applies to all land (government and private) in the Northwest Territories except the Wood Buffalo National Park. The applicable land and water boards issue any land-use permits required.
